Simon Adjiashvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. He received his MFA from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. Simon Adjiashvili had his first solo exhibition in Europe in 1993 at Group 2 Gallery, Brussels.
Since then, he had international solo and group shows at galleries and museums, including M.L. de Boer Gallery, Gallery Borzo, Amsterdam; Francis van hoof Gallery, Antwerp; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Museum of Israeli Art, Ramat Gan.
The main themes of his recent works are rooms, doorways and other architectural fragments. Dror Burstein described Adjiashvili's interiors as ambiances captured "a moment before they were abandoned, a moment before they became memory; the last glance before turning off the light and locking the door. The feeling of standing by the room at the very last moment, the door still open, sharpens the gaze and makes it feel fateful. Paradoxically the paintings recreate this fleeting last moment anew. What is more, they recreate it again and again, and transform it to a series of moments. Thus, what could have been seen as the blink of an eye before departure is suspended, as if the door which was about to close behind you has become many doors, and the moment of departure has been extended, thickened."
Adjiashvili reinvents Chiaroscuro Tradition in the Contemporary Painting, working with light, space and their mutual fragmentation on the border of recognition and memory. The latest paintings we are happy to present portray the same extended moments Burstein described, perhaps creating instead the feeling of a comeback instead of a suspended departure, projecting the calm feeling of a familiar space you come back after some time spent away.
