Overview

"All my life has been dedicated to painting, which I love deeply. Galerie Mokum, which has long supported quality in figurative painting, is offering me its walls to exhibit my work. The collection of 30 paintings on display at this Amsterdam exhibition represents, in my artistic approach, the pursuit of a kind of balance..."

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition by Antonio Matallana!

Antonio Matallana is a Spanish artist based in Paris, renowned for his meticulously detailed paintings created with a combination of egg tempera and oil on panel. His photorealistic still lifes depict everyday objects with such precision that they almost seem tangible, brought to life through his masterful use of vibrant colors and light. Objects like folded cloths and tin cans stand out vividly against the background, their sharply defined forms softened by subtly dissolved shadows.

Matallana’s compositions spark the viewer's imagination, evoking personal memories through the portrayal of timeless, familiar objects. He describes his technique as a blend of drawing, egg tempera, and oil painting. The use of egg tempera allows him to apply multiple thin, translucent layers of pigment, building a deep, luminous color. Combined with oil painting, this method infuses his work with suppleness, richness, and fluidity, creating pieces that are both vibrant and beautifully refined.

Antonio Matallana’s pursuit of balance and harmony is a central theme throughout his work. He seeks to create a delicate equilibrium between the "silence" of the background and the "dialogue" of the subject, allowing each element to interact in perfect unison. To maintain this sense of stability, Matallana consistently uses the same space and format in his compositions creating a constant foundation.
