Art on Paper

Overview

Art on Paper, Booth 18B.

Our debut year on AOP brings together three artists whose distinct practices highlight the incredible range of possibilities working on paper. Though their subjects and approaches vary widely, each artist captures something essential about the world around them, whether it’s the personal, the architectural, or the natural.

In her new body of work Eline Brontsema explores the beauty of Berlin’s swimming pools. Her colorful woodcuts combine a mastery of traditional craftsmanship with a modern fascination for architectural form and the stories embedded in these urban sanctuaries. Brontsema’s works evoke a contemplative stillness, where the absence of people amplifies the meditative qualities of water and space.

Machteld Schouten, with her background in the fashion industry, translates her love for color and form into vibrant, expressive portraits. Using ink with bold immediacy, Schouten creates layered works that are less about personal likeness and more about exploring the interplay of shape, color, and emotional resonance. Her portraits evoke a sense of individuality that transcends the personal, inviting viewers into a world intuitive expression.

Philine van der Vegte draws us into the countryside, where she paints both landscapes and the animals around her farm with affection and nuance. Whether it’s a goat, a goose, or a horse, her works radiate a deep respect and love for the natural world. Her sensitive use of paint and ink  captures both the character of her animal subjects and the serene beauty of rural landscapes, celebrating life outside the city.

Together, these three artists form an intriguing triad: layered explorations of humanity, the quiet grandeur of animals and nature, and the architectural stillness of swimming pools. Their works show us the diversity of experience and expression possible on paper, inviting viewers to explore connections between personal, natural, and constructed worlds.
