Stedelijk Museum Schiedam will be showing the exhibition 'Realism Now' with work by Nico Heilijgers from 22 February to 2 August 2020.
The exhibition shows an overview of realism in art in the Netherlands from the year 2000 to the present. Nico Heilijgers (Utrecht, 1964) studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he was taught by artists such as Matthijs Röling (1943) and Diederik Kraaijpoel (1928).
The mastery of the technique became an important part of his work here. Heilijgers' paintings are characterized by aesthetics, harmony and atmosphere, whereby the intangible, the inexpressible - call it poetry - elevates the image above the simple representation. The objects are painted in such a way that they are not of direct importance as an object, but as independent color areas or accents. Abstract values such as form, color, rhythm and material ultimately determine the painting.
The exhibition also shows the relationship between realism and abstraction.
For example, the work Qué Calor by Nico Heilijgers is shown next to an abstract work by Daan van Golden in a room where you can look for the similarities in form, color and composition.
